LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday accepted a petition pertaining to the absence of a cremation ground for Hindus to perform the last rites for their dead in the provincial capital of Punjab.

Justice Ali Akber Qureshi ruled on the maintainability of Advocate Ishtiaq Chaudhry’s appeal in this regard. The court ordered the director general of the Lahore Development Authority, the secretary of the local government and the deputy commissioner of Lahore to submit their replies in the matter by Thursday (September 13).

According to the petitioner, the 1973 Constitution safeguards the rights of all the citizens. In Lahore, “there is no cremation ground for Hindus to perform the last rites of their dead. The community faces great difficulty due to this.” The petitioner moved the court to order that a cremation ground be constructed in Lahore.
