Timeline: Former first-lady Kulsoom Nawaz

Former first lady and wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz passed away at a hospital in London on Tuesday.

Her husband Nawaz Sharif and daughter Maryam Nawaz are currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail.

Here is a timeline of her life and her role in Pakistani politics.


1950: Born as Kulsoom Rehana to a well-known family of Lahore, her maternal grandfather was renowned wrestler of his era, Ghulam Mohammad Baksh nicknamed as The Great Gama.

1970: Completes her graduate studies from University of Punjab in 1970.

1971: Kulsoom and Nawaz Sharif tie the knot in April. The couple had four children over the following years – Hassan, Hussain, Maryam and Asma.

1990: Kulsoom becomes the first-lady after Nawaz becomes the prime minister.

1997: Becomes first-lady for the second time.

 

1999: After a Pervez Musharraf-led coup d’état, Kulsoom is arrested and shifted to her residence. She also leads a party rally in Lahore the same year despite pressure from the Musharraf-led government.

1999: Assumes charge of the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N). She would hold the post for another three years.

2013: Becomes first lady for the third time after Nawaz Sharif assumes premiership.

2017: Diagnosed with Lymphoma (Throat cancer) and is shifted to London for treatment.

 

 

June, 2018: Kulsoom suffers a cardiac arrest, is shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Harley Street Clinic and placed on a ventilator.

 

September 11, 2018: Kulsoom Nawaz passes away in a hospital in London at the age of 68.
