In support of the Supreme Court-backed fund, now named as PM-CJP Dam Fund, renowned TV show host Hamid Mir announced one million rupees for the fundraising campaign from his personal account.

Announcing his decision, he showed cheque during his live TV show and said that he would sign this cheque soon to make a contribution of Rs1 million in the fund. “I contributed one million rupees in the dam fund,” he tweeted soon after his TV show.

“GNN directors Zulqarnain Nawaz Chattha and Zubair Nawaz Chattha announced five crores for the dam fund,” he wrote in his official Twitter account. In the show, musician, rock guitarist and activist Salman Ahmed also announced $10,000 for the fund.

On the occasion, he also announced that he would request nine of his close friends to donate $10,000 each to the fund. In the show, pop singer Shehzad Roy also supported the campaign. Former defence minister and senior PML-N leader Khurram Dastagir was also present in the show.

ATIF ASLAM DONATION

On Sunday, vocalist Atif Aslam called on Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar at his official residence in Islamabad, and presented him the cheque of Rs2.5 million to the fund for the Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams. In a video message, Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar who is amongst the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires announced contribution of $10,000. “I have decided to contribute $10,000 for the dams,” he said.

The official website of the Supreme Court of Pakistan shows that Rs 2,018,005,908 (two billion, eighteen million, five thousand, nine hundred and eight rupees) is current balance in the fundraising campaign for the two much-discussed dams.

In a brief pre-recorded address to the nation on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan appealed to the countrymen, especially overseas Pakistanis, to generously contribute for building new dams. He described the ongoing water crisis as the biggest challenge and warned that the country would be facing a drought-like situation if the new water reservoirs were not built within seven years.

Talking to delegations of the Akhuwat Foundation and the Message Foundation in Lahore on late last week, Justice Saqib Nisar had said that construction of new dams was critical for its survival, promising that he would continue his efforts for the purpose even after his retirement. He vowed to protect the dams for the construction of which the Supreme Court had initiated a campaign, saying that he was even ready to live in a tent on a dam’s site if it would be required for its protection.
