ATC rejects bail plea of two accused in extortion case

RAWALPINDI: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Rawalpindi on Friday rejected the bail plea of two accused arrested on charges of demanding extortion from Murree hotel owners.

The ATC No 3 Judge Abdur Raheem pronounced the verdict of rejecting the bail petition of Waseem Hussain Shaukat and Abdul Basit after hearing arguments from the prosecution and the defence.

The accused’s counsel contended that there was no evidence on record to prove that their clients demanded any extortion from the owners, therefore, bail should be granted to them.

The victims’ counsel said that the accused demanded extortion through the post and asked for the money to be provided at a specific place or else their family members would be killed or kidnapped. Their counsel further added that those letters had been recovered by the police during interrogation.

The ATC judge rejected the bail application after hearing the arguments from both sides.

Murree Police has already registered a case against the accused under section 319/18 on the application of Sajid Qureshi.
