Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday approved the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority’s (OGRA) request for increasing gas rates by 46 per cent and ordered for necessary measures to control annual gas theft of Rs50 million.

However, Naeemul Haque, special assistant to the PM, denied the gas price hike on Twitter.

“Totally false news. Gas prices were not even discussed during the meeting.”

He said this in response to a news story shared by Pakistani journalist Asma Shirazi.

Needless to say, people were not amused that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader was misquoting information.

TV anchor and journalist Mubashir Zaidi shared the official press release with the PM’s advisor.

“Read the official press release on the issue. Last four lines to be precise. How on earth you said prices were not discussed,” He said.

A Twitter user referred to the PTI leader’s pretence at obliviousness, “Naeem ul Haque was high in a high-level meeting.”

Another user referred to last year’s incident when senior leadership within the party had claimed that Naeemul Haque’s account had been hacked hours after suspicious tweets pertaining to Ayesha Gulalai were deleted: “Maybe his account has been hacked again”.

Another user said, “They still cannot believe that they are ruling the country. They think that minutes of meetings are not jotted down as it was during their hawai speeches in Jalsas.”

A user tweeted, “Mr Naeemul Haq only speaks when he is asleep. So, never mind whatever he says.”
