Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday defended notable economist Dr Atif R Mian’s induction into the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) reconstituted by Prime Minister Imran Khan last week.

While addressing media, Chaudhry slammed Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Shehla Raza’s tweet opposing the induction of minorities in the EAC.

“I don’t know where is all this coming from. How can you justify the persecution of religious minorities and their rights in Pakistan? What kind of people are those who are levelling these accusations?”

The minister added: “He [Atif R Mian] is a person revered worldwide and a favourite to win the Nobel Peace Prize within the next five years.”

The social media users on Twitter applauded Chaudhary’s statement and praised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government for a strong stand.

Former interior minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal supported the decision and tweeted: “Islam upholds the principle of merit. Therefore, merit should not be mixed with religion. Talent and competency are the most sought-after commodity today.”

Journalist Bilal Farooqi stated: “PTI govt hasn’t allowed itself to be cowed down by religious bigotry, stuck to its decision and in fact hit back at critics, who were unhappy over the presence of an Ahmadi Muslim in the EAC, with a clear, strong-worded response. Hoping to see more of this.”

Mentioning the double standards of people, one user wrote: “غیر مسلموں سے قرضہ بھی لینا ہے اور قرضے پر سود بھی ادا کرنا ہے لیکن “غیر مسلم “ ماہر معیشت سے مشورہ نہیں لینا ورنہ مدینہ ثانی کا نظام خطرے میں پڑ جائے گا قادیانیوں کو تو غیر مسلم قرار دے دیا پر کون لوک او تُسی

TV anchor and journalist Naseem Zehra supported Fawad Chaudhary and wrote: “V who believe Quaid’s vision 4 Pakistan is indispensable to the dignity & prosperity of all Pakistanis and indeed to the security of Pakistan, are fully with you on this . Any1 using religion 4 politics, which even PTI did during the elections, must b opposed.”
