KARACHI: The Hashoo Group has put Eqbal Mehdi’s art collection up for auction for the first time in 40 years.

The theme of the auction was “Spreading Smiles to Miles” and it was held at a local hotel the other day.

The auction was held to honour late master Eqbal Mehdi.

The event was largely attended by people belonging to various walks of life.

Late Mehdi’s work was created over a long period of his stay at the Hashoo Group Properties.

The event was inaugurated by Anwar Maqsood who is himself a versatile artist in his own right.

While addressing the audience, Maqsood said had Mehdi been alive today, the chief justice of Pakistan would have sentenced him to a 100 years in prison.

“Almost every Pakistani doctor in the United States (US) has Eqbal’s paintings in his or her house”, he added.

Maqsood also said that he and Mehdi were great friends and the latter’s paintings are also installed on the walls of newly elected President Dr Arif Alvi’s house.

Eqbal Mehdi’s daughter Liza Eqbal Mehdi said that the Hashoo Group decided to use their art collection through auction and use the auction proceeds to uplift less developed areas of the country.

The Hashwani family have traditionally complimented their business empire with philanthropy.

The exhibition opened for art lovers on September 5 from 11am to 11pm at the Karachi Marriott Hotel.
