Karakorum University kicks off tree plantation drive in Gilgit

GILGIT: Karakorum International University (KIU) on Monday kicked off a tree plantation drive and Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Attaullah Shah inaugurated the campaign by planting a sapling in the campus.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, the VC said that the university would plant about 10,000 trees as part of prime minister’s plantation drive and urged faculty members and students to vigorously take part in the campaign to make the entire project a complete success.

He asked the university administration to take care of trees which they planted on the premises and give them proper water for their nourishment and growth. He said that university had set target of one million trees to be planted across the Gilgit Baltitan and appealed the residents especially the students to try their hard to achieve the target and tackle challenges in wake of climate change, successfully.

As part of such efforts, the vice chancellor said that forest department had provided round ten thousand trees which would be planted in Huza, Gizar and Diamer campuses of the university during the first phase. In second phase, he said that the campaign would be extended to rest part of the area in which maximum trees would be planted.

Given importance and vitality of the trees for human life, the university had launched a forestry programme which would give boost to the forest sector of Gilgit Baltistan, he said. He said that the global warming was one of the biggest challenges, the world including Pakistan was facing currently and added that issue was gradually rising to the alarming level.
