20-year-old diagnosed with Congo virus in Karachi, shifted to hospital

KARACHI: A 20-year-old man was diagnosed with Congo Virus in Karachi, raising the total number of cases in 2018 to four.

The man, identified as Pervaiz, a resident of Safoora Goth, began to experience symptoms of Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) and was taken to Jinnah Hospital.

Last month, a 23-year-old was also diagnosed with the disease.

According to reports, three individuals infected with Congo virus are currently being treated at Jinnah Hospital.

“Two of the patients are from Quetta, while the third is from Karachi,” said Dr Seemin Jamali.

She added further that in 2018, 11 patients have been hospitalised with four having succumbed to the illness.

People can be infected with the Congo virus if they come into contact with an infected tick or animals.

The disease has a mortality rate between 40 and 50 per cent.
