Over 0.5m trees to be planted in capital: mayor

ISLAMABAD: Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz has said that around 500,000 saplings in different areas of the federal capital are being planted during the tree plantation campaign.

“Ongoing monsoon tree plantation drive is unique in its nature, as the first time private sector is providing plant saplings for plantation in different areas of the federal capital while MCI Environment Wing is only providing technical expertise in tree plantation,” he said while planting a tree at the Faisal Mosque.

The mayor said that plantation of trees and their preservation was perpetual charity. The Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad has taken steps to practically engage all stakeholders in the tree plantation drive, he said. All government departments and private sectors were collaborating with each other to make this city more clean and green.

On this occasion, president of the U Microfinance Bank and officers of MCI were also present. “MCI is committed to make Islamabad more beautiful and modern city of the world,” Anser Aziz said, adding that maximum plantation of trees would purify the environment, which would help reduce the pollution in the city.

He said that when MCI was established, it was the prime objective that all the stakeholders should join hands with MCI in this noble cause, so that protection of green character of Islamabad and its enhancement could be ensured. He said that it was result of the efforts, different departments, educational institutes and individual were collaborating with MCI and planting trees all around the city.

The mayor said that MCI was working on a comprehensive strategy under that strategy; all trees which were causing pollen allergy would be replaced by the fruit and other indigenous plants including Chir, Pine, Kachnar, Amaltas, Dhreak, Jacaranda, Olive and Jaman etc.
