An announcement by Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders to hold a competition of blasphemous caricatures has sparked outrage in the Muslim community and Pakistanis in particular have been deeply hurt by this. The Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) also announced a “decisive march” from Lahore to Islamabad on Wednesday, and expressed that they will “stay on the streets until either the publication of blasphemous cartoons in the Netherlands end or the govt immediately ends diplomatic ties with the Dutch”.
Though the competition has now been cancelled in wake of the protests around the world, the hashtag #OurProphetOurHonour has become a trending topic on Twitter with Pakistanis expressing their disgust and anger on the social media platform.
Actor and political activist, Hamza Ali Abbasi was among the first to protest against this, posting a video on social media requesting the people and lawmakers to protest against this peacefully.
Dr Tahirul Qadri said, “It has now become inevitable to make necessary laws at the international level to curb the contemptuous and disrespectful behaviour towards sacred personalities in the future. OIC must play its role in pursuing this important task.”
