The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) Chairman Justice (r) Ali Nawaz Chohan asked the government to amend the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and make enforced disappearances an offence.

According to a local media report, the NCHR chairman in his statement on the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances observed every year on Aug 30 said that the blame of enforced disappearance fell on the authorities.

Moreover, the chairman said that the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights chairman had directed the Ministry of Human Rights to draft a bill on enforced disappearances within a month in collaboration with the NCHR and other stakeholders.

He expressed the hope that the new government would devise a mechanism under which the people’s rights to safety, freedom were guaranteed in line with the constitution and the international treaties such as Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, International Convention on Economic Social and Cultural Rights and Convention against Torture.
