ISLAMABAD: Minister for Federal Education and Technical Training Shafqat Mahmood has said that the ministry is working on a comprehensive education policy to ensure quality education and provide level playing field as well as equal opportunities to everyone in the country.

Talking to Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director Xiaohong Yang on Wednesday, he said that Pakistan was currently facing various challenges in the education sector but the government was fully committed to resolving these challenges. He said that among the various challenges were the different streams or systems of education that include government schools, private schools and religious schools or madrassahs.

“There is also the challenge of providing quality education without discrimination,” he said. “We are working on making a comprehensive education policy that will address these challenges.” The education minister said that the ministry’s main focus would also be on the human skills development. He said that the ministry was setting up skill universities for vocational and technical training in close liaison with all the chambers of commerce and other stakeholders in this regard.

Shafqat also suggested that the ADB should work on skills development in Pakistan. The country director reiterated ADB’s commitment to support Pakistan in order to improve its economy, reduce poverty and achieve development goals. She appreciated the steps the government intends to take for the promotion of education. “We are looking forward to working closely with the government for the progress and prosperity of the Pakistani people,” she said.
