The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday rejected a National Health Services (NHS) report on HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the country, a local media outlet reported.

The report had estimated that 150,000 people suffer from the disease in the country and that the number is rising by 20,000 each year.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar however rejected the report, with Justice Umar Ata Bandial terming it “completely incomprehensible”.

The SC had taken up the case in 2008.

CJP Nisar also directed the NHS to submit a new, improved report.

The CJP further said that an awareness program on the issue must be launched with the media playing its due role.
