PTI to contest by-poll from PK-78

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would submit nomination paper of its candidate for by-poll in PK-78 scheduled to be held on October 14, where ANP leader Haroon’s widow was contesting the election.

The PTI media head Iftikhar Durrani told APP here Wednesday that PTI will contest election in by-poll from PK-78, however, the name of the candidate was yet to finalized. Earlier, Muhammad Irfan of PTI was contesting from the constituency against ANP leader Haroon Bilour who was killed in a suicide attack.

It is to mention here that ANP had nominated Haroon’s widow as its candidate for by-poll and her son submitted her nomination papers to regional election commission on Wednesday August 29.

Late Haroon Bilour’s son Daniya told media after submission of nomination papers said all the Opposition parties had assured full support to ANP and would not contest by-elections from the constituency.

The general election in PK-78 was canceled after assassination of ANP leader Haroon Bilour in a terrorist suicide attack in his coroner meeting here in Yaka Toot area on July 11, 2018. Haroon was a candidate from this constituency.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the intending candidates can submit their

papers till August 30, while the list of the candidates would be displayed on August 31. Similarly, the scrutiny of candidates would be held on September 4, while the appeals against the decisions of Returning Officers would be filed till September 8.

The Appellate Tribunal would decide against the appeals till September 13 and the revised list of candidates would be displayed on September 14.

The candidates could withdraw their nomination papers till September 15, while election symbols would be allotted on September 16. The election would be held on October 14.

It is pertinent to mention here that by-poll in one NA, nine PK constituencies would be held as these became vacant due to death of contesting candidates, resignation under Article 223 and postponement under Articles 218(3) of the Constitution.

The constituencies included NA-35 Bannu, PK-3 Swat-II, PK-7 Swat-IV, PK-44, Swabi-II, PK-53 Mardan-VI, PK-61 Nowshera-I, PK-64 Nowshera-IV, PK78 Peshawar-XIII, PK-97 DIKhan-III and PK-99 D.I.Khan-V.
