FIA tracks down Rs33 billion money trail in money-laundering probe

KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has tracked a Rs33 billion money trail over its investigation into money-laundering scam, officials claim.

According to reports, information regarding Rs33 billion of the Rs35 billion allegedly laundered abroad via fake bank accounts has been obtained by the agency. The information details the time and method of laundering, identities of the accounts used for the transfer and the recipients of the money.

Former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur are among the 32 people the agency is investigating for laundering money via fake accounts.

Omni Group Chairman Anwar Majeed and his son, Abdul Ghani Majeed were taken into custody this month over the probe while Hussain Lawai, a close aide of Zardari, was arrested last month.

Discovery of the information was discussed during a meeting of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) of the FIA on Monday.

The FIA had previously conducted raids at a Sugar Mill owned by the Omni Group and confiscated relevant records, weapons and hard disk from computers.

The agency is currently sifting through confiscated material.
