Imran Khan nominates Arif Alvi for president: Fawad Chaudhry

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry on Saturday said that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has nominated PTI leader Arif Alvi for the post of Pakistan president.

Earlier on Thursday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had announced that the presidential elections will be held on September 4.

Nomination papers for the presidential elections can be filed until August 27, according to the electoral body’s notification.

The commission will scrutinise the nomination papers on August 29 and candidates can withdraw their candidature by August 30.

Alvi had won the recently held general elections from Karachi’s NA-247.

The PTI leader is a dentist by profession and is also one of the founding members of the party.

Earlier on Friday, PTI had nominated Sardar Usman Ahmad Khan Buzdar for the coveted slot of Punjab chief minister.

According to sources, the decision was taken after Buzdar had held an important meeting with PTI chief Imran Khan and Jahangir Tareen in Bani Gala.

Imran had also consulted Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, who too had endorsed Buzdar’s nomination.

Buzdar had garnered 26,897 votes from PP-286 Taunsa Sharif and had defeated independent candidate Khawaja Muhammad Nizamul Mehmood.

Earlier, he had remained a member of the PML-Q from 2002 till 2008 and later switched to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

In 2013, he had contested the elections on PML-N’s ticket but had lost to a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate.
