Former Indian prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee passes away

NEW DEHLI: Former India prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday passed away in New Delhi at the age of 93, according to the Hindustan Times.

Earlier it was reported that the former Indian PM had been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in critical condition. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders visited AIIMS him in the morning after the news broke out.

According to a health update released by the hospital, the former premier had been placed on life support.

Doctors treating the veteran BJP leader remained tight-lipped about his condition. Hospital sources, however, said his condition has worsened over the last 24 hours.

“Former PM Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted for the last nine weeks at AIIMS. His condition is critical and he is on life support,” a statement had said.

Narendra Modi also visited AIIMS on Wednesday evening. Union Ministers Harsh Vardhan, Piyush Goyal and Smriti Irani also enquired after the former Indian prime minister.

Vajpayee’s health took a turn for the worse after he suffered a stroke in 2009. The former Indian prime minister was diabetic, with only one functional kidney. He developed dementia after the stroke and was admitted to AIIMS on June 11 following a kidney tract infection, chest congestion, urinary tract infection and low urine output.

He was placed on slow dialysis in June to help his kidneys heal. Vajpayee had been in the intensive care unit of the cardiothoracic and neuroscience tower at AIIMS since then.
