KMC organises bicycle, donkey cart races to celebrate Independence Day

KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) the other day organised bicycle and donkey cart races in connection with Independence Day celebrations.

Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony held in the KMC building on the conclusion of cycle and donkey cart races, KMC Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Saif-ur-Rehman said bicycle and donkey cart races are the oldest sports of Karachi in which youth take part in large numbers, said a statement on Monday.

He said youth, specially from Lyari, has had prominent positions in these sports and these people have maintained the old identity of Karachi.

Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar also has a keen interest in these sports and wants that players of these sports get full patronage and support at all levels, he added.

The events were organised by the Culture and Sports department of the KMC as part of the celebrations of Independence Day on Sunday.

Sports and Culture Committee Chairman Aijaz Ahmed Khan, Media Management Director Ali Hassan Sajid, Sports Director Khursheed Shah, Ghulam Mohammad Khan and other sports personalities were also present on the occasion.

The cycle race was held at the Railway Ground near I.I. Chundrigar Road to PIDC Building via Neti Jeti bridge and the cyclists covered 50-kilometre distance in seven rounds.

The first position was taken by Wazir of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and got Rs20 thousand cash prize and trophy, the second position was secured by Sameer and he got Rs15 thousand prize and trophy and third by Inam Irfan and he got Rs 10 thousand prizes and trophy.

The donkey cart race was participated by 40 players which were held from Civic Centre to KMC Head Office and the winner was Asghar who got Rs 20 thousand cash prize and trophy, the second prize  was won by M. Tariq who got Rs 15 thousand and trophy and third  position was secured by Asghar Shah who got Rs 10 thousand and  trophy whereas all players got Rs 2000.

Afterwards, the metropolitan commissioner planted a tree in KMC Sports Complex and other KMC officers also planted trees.

He also stressed the need for more and more tree plantation in the city.
