Armed robbers looted at least five jewellery shops in Taxila city during Sunday afternoon, according to a report published in local media.
The robbery took place in the evening while the police failed to established the number of robbers and the value of gold stolen.
Taxila Station House Office (SHO) inspector Riaz said the gunmen arrived on bikes at around 3:45pm and looted at least five jewellers.
“There were three or four or five men according to different accounts. Two of them were in uniforms of private security guards and others were wearing shalwar qameez. The jewellers have not told us how much gold was stolen,” he said.
The SHO relayed that there was an exchange of fire too and one of the robbers was reportedly injured but his fellows managed to take him away too.
He added that police teams had been constituted and raids were underway but no arrest had been made thus far.
Police said they were keeping an eye on all public and private hospitals and clinics as one of the robbers had been injured and might seek medical care.
However, police could not tell how the robbers vanished into thin air after plundering the whole market in broad daylight.
“Teams have been constituted under the supervision of a superintendent of police for arrest of the robbers,” said a spokesperson for Rawalpindi police.
He said they had also contacted police officials in the neighbouring Islamabad, Attock and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for help in arresting the suspects.
