ECP directs lawmakers to vacate additional seats before taking oath

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday ordered candidates who won from multiple national or provincial assembly seats during the recently held general elections to resign from all seats except the one they intend to retain.

In accordance with Article 223 (3) of the Constitution, all candidates winning from multiple seats must tender their resignation in order to take oath for assembly membership, the ECP notification read.

The chief election commissioner must be the recipient of the resignation. The resignation must also be delivered either in person or via an authorised representative to the ECP Secretariat in Islamabad or offices of provincial election commissioners, the notification added.

First session of the National Assembly is scheduled to be called on August 13.

All provinces will also hold their first sessions on August 13 while the first session for Punjab Assembly will be held on August 15.
