KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday sought details of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA-elect Faisal Vawda’s dual nationality in a case pleading his disqualification.
While hearing petitions pertaining to election results, the high court directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to submit a report regarding Vawda’s dual nationality. The petition of the case was filed by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Qadir Khan Mandokhel.
Mandokhel claimed that the NA-249 winner did not declare his United States (US) citizenship and concealed foreign properties as well as the bank accounts in the nomination papers and affidavit submitted for the 2018 polls.
When the SHC inquired as to why the petitioner did not file an objection during scrutiny of nomination papers, the PPP leader said he was gathering information. A representative of the commission denied that the ECP had any knowledge of Vawda’s dual citizenship.
The court has directed the ECP to submit a reply by August 30.
In the July 25 polls, Vawda emerged as a winner with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif trailing in Karachi’s constituency with a narrow margin of 718 votes.
