–Former Lahore DCO was drawing Rs1.4m salary from corruption tainted Punjab govt company
LAHORE: Punjab Saaf Pani Company (PSPC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Captain (r) Muhammad Usman on Thursday resigned from his position.
The PSPC is currently being investigated by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after the Supreme Court (SC) found out in April that the company had taken Rs4 billion from the provincial exchequer but did not provide a single glass of clean water.
Usman is currently being investigated by the corruption watchdog as part of an inquiry into the assets of heads of public companies in Punjab. He was drawing a salary of Rs1,465,000 as the CEO of the PSPC
In Usman’s last appearance before the SC July 24, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar had inquired if the salary drawn as the PSPC head was returned. To this, Usman’s defence counsel had replied that his client not only has a clean record of service but is also free of any corruption allegations.
PSPC Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Umar Malik has taken additional charge of the company following Usman’s resignation.
In 2017, the NAB had launched an investigation into the affairs of 56 public sector companies formed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shehbaz Sharif’s administration in Punjab for their alleged involvement in corruption.
The companies under investigation are accused of irregularities, recruitment in violation of procurement rules and merit, nepotism, and non-completion of various projects in time.
In May 2018, NAB had interrogated Shehbaz Sharif’s son Hamza Shehbaz in regard to the PSPC scam, questioning his alleged role in awarding certain contracts and making appointments despite not being a member of the board of directors.
Furthermore, Shehbaz Sharif’s son-in-law Imran Ali Yousaf is also being probed by the corruption watchdog for renting out an office in his plaza in Gulberg to the company at overpriced rates.
