ISLAMABAD: Senate Functional Committee on Problems of Less Developed Areas on Tuesday directed to enroll maximum number of deserving women of less developed areas in the poverty survey of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).

Expressing reservations over the previous poverty survey, Committee Chairman Usman Kakar said the women of remote areas of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Sindh were not getting any amount from BISP.

Briefing the committee, BISP Secretary Omer Hamid Khan said billions of rupees were given to the beneficiaries of less developed areas in the past three years.

He recommended that BISP should appoint people of Balochistan on higher posts, over which the committee suggested that BISP filled the vacant post as soon as possible and included representation from each province in its board of governors.

To a question, the BISP secretary said that 90 per cent funds were provided by the government while 10 per cent by the World Bank and Asian Development Funds.

He said that during fiscal years 2015 to 2016, over Rs67 billion were distributed among 3.6 million beneficiaries while in 2016 to 2017, Rs69 billion had been distributed among 3.7 million beneficiaries. “During the financial year 2017 to 2018, Rs66 billion were distributed among 3.5 million recipients,” he added.
