LAHORE: Rana Liaqat, an independent candidate who won from PP-39 during the recently conducted general elections, joined the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) on Monday.

PML-N leader Khawaja Asif attended the meeting during which Liaqat expressed his faith in the party’s leadership.

Liaqat is a former member of the party as well.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif is also chairing an important meeting in Lahore today with senior party leadership to iron out strategy to form government in Punjab and at the federal level.

According to reports, Shehbaz is also expected to discuss the nomination of the party’s candidate for the prime minister slot.

The PML-N and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are locked in a tug of war over forming the government in Punjab. PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah believes that only 18 MPA-elects are required for the party to form the government in the province.

“We have won 130 seats and need an additional 18 MPA-elects. With the Pakistan Peoples Party’s six elected MPAs and 13 independents we will have the numbers to form the government,” said Sanaullah.

On the other hand, the PTI has claimed that with the support of 18 independent candidates and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), its seats in the Punjab assembly would reach 148 members, enough to form the government.
