Qureshi eyes coveted slot in Imran’s cabinet: report

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Vice-Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi is expected to hold a powerful portfolio in the upcoming federal cabinet led by party chief Imran Khan, following his win on the NA-156 (Multan-III) seat, local media reports have stated.

Though Qureshi was a strong contender for the Punjab chief minister’s position before the elections, it appears to be not possible because he had been defeated by an independent candidate on the provincial assembly seat PP-217 (Multan-VII).

Qureshi, an important member of PTI, hails from the Qureshi family of district Multan, which is also the caretaker of the Bahauddin Zakariya shrine.

His father, Sajjad Hussain Qureshi, was a prominent politician and a member of the PPP in the 1970s.

A graduate of Cambridge University, Qureshi has had a successful political career ever since he made an entry into parliamentary politics as a member of the Punjab Assembly from Multan as an independent candidate in 1985.

In 2011, Qureshi resigned from the National Assembly seat in 2011 and announced his support for the Imran Khan-led PTI.

He again made it to the National Assembly in 2013 and led his party from the front in the Lower House of Parliament.
