Korangi creek biodiversity destroyed by discharge of pollutants

KARACHI: Continued flow of untreated pollutants into Korangi creek has destroyed its biodiversity, a local media outlet reported on Sunday.

The ‘Impact of indiscriminate disposal of untreated effluents in Korangi creek’ as the study is titled, was conducted at the Institute of Environmental Studies at Karachi University by Dr Amir Alamgir and Prof Moazzam Ali Khan.

The tidal channel receives polluted water and waste from industrial, urban and agricultural sources. The study points out that this has impacted Korangi creek’s ecology and has impacted spawning grounds of fish.

The Korangi creek has historically played a critical role in commercial fishing activities and supports the livelihood for a large number of fishermen.
