SIUT Int’l course on parenteral nutrition concludes

KARACHI: A two-day course on Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) designed to provide current conceptual and operational knowledge to healthcare providers interested in the provision of healthcare nutrition therapy concluded at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) here on Sunday.

The course, first of its kind of international level event was jointly organised by SIUT and Pakistan Nutrition and Dietetic Society (PNDS).

It was organised with an aim to educate doctors, pharmacists, nurses and dietitians about the optimum nutrition which can be best provided with multidisciplinary team and cover the aspect of coordination and communication between medical professionals is prudent for improved patient outcome.

Highlighting the importance of the course, the experts stressed the need of specialised nutritional care provided to the patients who are unable to meet their nutritional requirement orally.

The experts explained to the participants about how to recommend appropriate TPN formula adjustments to better meet nutritional needs or to prevent adverse effects and manage potential metabolic, infectious and technical complications.

They also elaborated on understanding the limitations of each specialty involved in formulation, compounding and administration of TPN.

The course attended by a large number of medical professionals. Addressed during the two-day course were Ainsley Malone from Ohio, USA, Mozamila Mughal (PNDS), Samina Badar (Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital),  Atif Waqar (Aga Khan University Hospital), Ali Asghar Lanewala (SIUT) and Kehkashan Zehra (SIUT).

Earlier, SIUT Director Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi in his welcome address explained the philosophy of SIUT which aims at providing comprehensive medical care to the population free of charge and without any compromise to their dignity.
