LAHORE: The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday ordered for legislation regarding ailing prisoners. The court also ordered all provincial governments for registration of such prisoners.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, passed the orders while hearing a notice regarding terminally ill prisoners languishing in jails, at the SC Lahore Registry.

During the hearing, two different reports were submitted by the Punjab government and Sindh government on the matter.

A law officer, on behalf of the Punjab government, apprised the bench that three prisoners were suffering from cancer in Punjab jails, and they had been released. The court also informed that out of three, two ill prisoners had died in Sindh.

At this, the bench directed the provincial governments to review release of prisoners suffering from fatal diseases in the light of medical board reports.
