LAHORE: With Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) all set to form its government in the centre with 119 seats of the National Assembly, both the Imran Khan-led party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) are now in a neck and neck contest to form their government in Punjab.

According to official but incomplete results, embattled PML-N is in the lead with 125 seats while PTI is trailing behind with 122 seats of the Punjab Assembly.

The third spot has been secured by independent candidates with 32 seats.

The party willing to form the government will need 149 seats in the 297-seat house.

In a bid to sit on the treasury benches of the provincial assembly and avoid the continuous tussle, as witnessed during the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led federal government and PML-N’s tenure in Punjab, PTI chief has reportedly tasked party leaders to contact independent candidates who have won the PP seats.

PML-N, on the other hand, in a bid to maintain its stronghold within the country’s largest province is also seeking alliances while struggling to lead the Punjab government.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has held a meeting with his elder brother, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, and Maryam Nawaz at Adiala Jail to discuss the political situation after elections, in which their party seems to have lost ground to PTI.

Meanwhile, according to complete results, PML-N has won 10 seats out of total 14 National Assembly seats from Lahore while PTI has won four seats from the provincial capital.
