SC calls for appointment record of SBP governor

LAHORE: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday ordered the federal government to submit records pertaining to the appointment of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Tariq Bajwa.

A three-member bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar heard the petition at the SC Lahore Registry.

The petition, challenging the SBP governor’s appointment, had been filed by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and Senator Taj Haider. The senator claimed that the incumbent SBP governor did not meet the requirements required for the post.

Moreover, the petitioner also contended that the post was not advertised publically and the appointment had allegedly been made without proper procedure.

Earlier this month, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had dismissed a petition regarding Bajwa’s removal from office.

The petition had been filed by 22 senators hailing from the PPP and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Bajwa is a career civil servant and joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1981 and served at various government posts, according to the SBP’s website.
