LAHORE: An accountability court on Monday extended the physical remand of accused Qamarul Islam Raja and Waseem Ajmal for 14 days in the Saaf Pani Company corruption scam.

During the hearing of the case, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) pleaded the judge for an extension in the physical remand of Qamarul Islam Raja and Waseem Ajmal to carry out further investigation.

On June 26, NAB arrested Saaf Pani Company’s former chairman Raja for allegedly awarding contracts to ‘favourites’.

NAB Lahore has grilled a number of high profile people in the case, including former Punjab finance minister Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, former PML-N Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Waheed Gul and Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif’s son, ex-MNA Hamza Shehbaz in connection with the investigation.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar had taken suo motu notice of non-provision of potable water to the people of Punjab.

Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Saeed had earlier conceded before the Supreme Court that a single drop of water could not be made available to the people of the province despite the government having spent Rs4 billion on the Saaf Pani Project.
