Medical team reaches Adiala Jail for Nawaz’s check-up

RAWALPINDI: A five-member medical committee has been formed by the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Monday to examine the health of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is presently detained in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail for corruption.

The medical board is led by Dr Aijaz Qadeer and comprises of PIMS Head of Cardiology Dr Naeem Malik, Medical Specialist Dr Shajee Siddiqui, Dr Sohail Tanvir and Dr Mashood.

Nawaz Sharif has been shifted from his cell to the prison’s hospital facility as the medical team reached Adiala Jail with a mobile laboratory.

It was reported that the caretaker government wants the medical board to cross-check Nawaz’s medical report with Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) head  Major General (r) Dr Azhar Mehmood Kayani’s report as well.

Kayani conducted the first check-up of the former premier late Sunday night.

It was also reported that “Nawaz wants to be shifted to RIC but the government wants to shift him to PIMS,” adding that the “PIMS’ VIP ward is being prepared for the former premier”.

Earlier, media reports suggested that Nawaz was experiencing numerous medical issues due to dehydration.

A team of health officials on Sunday carried out the former premier’s medical check-up stating that “the ex-premier was suffering from dehydration, which led to multiple health problems”.

The jail superintendent reportedly penned a letter to PIMS to set up a medical board in light of the former PM’s health.

Nawaz Sharif arrived in Pakistan on July 13 along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz. Upon arrival, they were arrested to serve his jail sentence in the Avenfield verdict.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said the nation is concerned regarding Nawaz’s medical condition in jail.

“PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif had written letters to the caretaker premier and Punjab chief minister to appeal to provide basic amenities to Nawaz,” Marriyum said.

The PML-N leader added, “Jail authorities deprived Nawaz of basic facilities.”

“Nawaz’s condition worsened due to denial of facilities,” she added.
