CJP directs to ensure admissions in private medical colleges on merit

LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar on Monday remarked that back channels for seeking admission into private medical colleges will be shut.

He gave these remarks while presiding over a three-member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) during the course of hearing of admission and charging of additional fee in private medical colleges’ case.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director Dr Usman Anwar filed a detailed report and informed the court that Rs745 million, which were collected from the students under the head of additional fee, have been taken back and returned to students.

The FIA director said that private medical colleges extorted money from the students in the name of donations, foreign quota and additional fee. The data of 23,000 students from 100 colleges was collected.

The CJP remarked, “Private medical colleges will not be allowed to receive donations at any cost and the criterion of central admission policy will be settled. Backdoors for admission into private medical colleges will be closed and the court will not hesitate if it has to issue an order or has to get a legislation enacted in this respect.”

The CJP maintained that whatever criterion is fixed by PMDC will be implemented at every cost and heavy fines will be imposed on colleges which show negligence in this regard.

The court directed the PMDC and other respondents to hold meetings and file recommendations before the court.
