LAHORE: Many voters are complaining that their votes have been transferred to distant places as election day closes in, a local media outlet reported on Saturday.

One resident of Lahore found his vote transferred to Karachi, a place he has never visited once.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has dismissed these complaints as it launched a month-long public awareness campaign, asking voters to double check all relevant data. An ECP official admitted that human errors may cause such problems but suggested that in most cases such incidents occur when relatives of the ‘missing’ voter mention the person in more than one place.

However, according to ECP spokesperson Huda Gohar, the problem cannot be resolved before the elections because the electoral roll cannot be legally amended after the elections schedule in announced.
