LAHORE: US officials are meeting Taliban members as the Trump administration increases efforts to seek an end to the conflict in Afghanistan, according to a report by NBC news.
The report claims that secret meetings took place n Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates and Qatar, with at least five Americans and “three senior Taliban commanders” participating in at meeting at Doha.
The Taliban have previously used former commanders as negotiators in dialogue, the report noted.
The militant group’s commanders had demanded strict security and cover because they did not wish to be identified by Russian, Chinese or Arab intelligence agencies.
A spokesperson for the US State Department did not confirm the meeting took place but only said that the administration was eager to resolve the conflict.
A US Department of Defence spokesperson claimed that it was “prepared to support and facilitate an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace process”.
