ISLAMABAD: The government and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) were called upon by the Senate Standing Committee on Interior to initiate a crackdown against those involved in online mudslinging against candidates for the upcoming general elections.

FIA Cybercrime Director captain (r) Muhammad Shoaib said in a statement before the Senate body, “As objectionable material is being uploaded from abroad it becomes difficult to take action but we are trying our best to investigate the matter and take action against the elements concerned, but there is a lack of coordination between the FIA and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).”

Senator Ateeq Sheikh said, “These elements circulating such images on social media want to sabotage election activities and bring unrest to the country.”

The FIA cybercrime director also told the committee that politicians such as Shehla Raza, Muhammad Sadiq, Pir Sadaruddin Shah and Ayesha Gulalai were being defamed on social media platforms.
