Transgender person shot dead in Hafizabad

HAFIZABAD: A transgender person was shot dead on Thursday night at a wedding ceremony in Hafizabad.

It was reported that the incident occurred when a guest opened fired at the transgender person when they confronted the guest to stop harassing them.

According to the police, the suspect fled the crime scene and has not been arrested yet.

A case has been registered against the suspect and the police are currently looking for him.

Following this, the transgender community protested against the incident and appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar to take action against the killing.

Earlier this year, a transgender person and friend were shot dead in Peshawar after unidentified people opened fire when the two were in a rickshaw on Ring Road, en route to Patang Chowk from Iqbal Plaza.

Similarly, another transgender person was shot dead after she was beaten up by unknown armed men in Kalu Khan area of Swabi district.

It has been reported that at least 56 transgender persons have been killed in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province since 2015.

Pakistan has a long history of cases of violence against the transgender community. According to TransAction Alliance KP, seven transgender persons were killed in the province in 2017, while 208 cases of different kinds of violence, including sexual harassment, rape, gang rape, torture, extortion, denial of access to services, and misbehaviour at police stations and public spaces were recorded.
