ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar, who are currently in Adiala Jail will not be able to cast their votes on July 25.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, even though the prisoners have the right to cast their votes from jail,  the Sharifs will not be able to do so as the postal ballot exercise has already been carried out

“The three convicts cannot cast their votes while in jail,” said an Election Commission official. “The Election Act has no concession for such a situation. Each clause of the Election Act is being implemented.”

In 2017, the SC disqualified Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Papers case.

The court ordered NAB to file three corruption references against Nawaz and his family. An anti-corruption court has sentenced the family in one of the three references – Avenfield.

The former PM was awarded 11 years in jail, Maryam Nawaz was awarded eight years and Capt (r) Safdar also awarded one-year sentence in the case. They have appealed the decision.

They were arrested upon their return to the country on July 13, however, they have appealed the decision.
