Our top priority is free and fair elections: Syed Ali Zafar

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Law and Justice Syed Ali Zafar here on Thursday said that the caretaker government’s first and foremost priority is to hold timely peaceful, transparent, free and fair elections.

He said this during a meeting with the European Union (EU) Election Observation Mission Pakistan. Senior officials of the Ministry of Law and Justice also attended the meeting.

EU Election Observation Mission Pakistan Deputy Chief Observer Dimitra Ioannou briefed the law minister on the role and proposed activities of the mission. During the course of the meeting, Zafar was also apprised of the Election Observation Mission’s presence in all provinces. He was informed that a total of 120 observers would be stationed in various parts of Pakistan to monitor the election process, assess legal framework and monitor adherence to implementation standards of international laws.

The mission will present its preliminary report on July 27 and will publish its final report on the election observation afterwards.

Speaking to the delegation, Zafar said that the caretaker government will assist the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in holding peaceful, transparent and timely elections. He assured the delegation that a level playing field is being provided to all political parties in the upcoming election. The law minister also said that Pakistan would welcome suggestions and recommendations of EU observers to further improve the election process.
