ISLAMABAD: Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and captain (r) Safdar Awan should be given the same relief as former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur, said Senator Pervaiz Rashid on Monday.
“The court earlier upheld that no candidate should be barred from participating in the electoral process till the July 25 polls are over and this was the basis on which Zardari and Talpur were granted relief,” he said while talking to media outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
“Nawaz, Maryam, Capt (retd) Safdar and Qamar-ul-Islam Raja should be granted the same relief. Injustice was done to Qamar-ul-Islam Raja in favour of Chaudhry Nisar,” he added.
Amjad Pervaiz, Maryam Nawaz’s counsel, said that the imprisonment was in contradiction with law.
“The accountability court’s verdict is in contradiction with the law and declaring it void would serve justice,” he said.
“Our case is very strong and on merit. We are right and we hope to get some relief,” he added.
Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar filed an appeal against Avenfield Properties corruption reference verdict in IHC on Monday.
Nawaz was previously sentenced to 11 years in prison while his daughter Maryam was sentenced to 7 years. The duo were arrested after landing in Pakistan on July 13.
Safdar was sentenced to a year in prison over the case.
