NEW DELHI: Indian political party Congress has taunted its rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “friendship” with the deposed prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, who has been sent to jail for 10 years in Avenfiled corruption reference.

On its official Twitter handle, Congress tweeted: “Nawaz Sharif has been arrested on corruption charges. We’d like to know what his dear friend, PM Modi has to say about this.”

Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were jailed a couple of hours after a team of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) formally arrested them at the Lahore airport on their arrival from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday night.

An anti-graft court in Islamabad had on July 6, sentenced Nawaz to a total of 11 years in prison and slapped a £8 million fine (Rs1.3 billion) in the Avenfield case, whereas Maryam received an eight-year sentence with a £2 million fine (Rs335 million).
