Capital authorities questioned over slum policy failure

ISLAMABAD: The capital city’s local government, district administration and civic authority were placed on notice by the Supreme Court on Friday over failure to manage the difficulties faced by residents of slums, a local media outlet reported on Friday.

Babar Awan has been appointed amicus curae in the case.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar observed that the government must provide facilities to the poor living in slums.

Capital Development Authority (CDA) Member Planning Asad Mehboob Kiyani appeared before the court over the issue.

The CJP observed that the authority has developed poor policies, including for the slums.

Kiyani responded that Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) has the responsibility of managing slums in the capital after the local government elections.

The petitioner said most of the residents in slums are hired as domestic servants and that living conditions in the slums are shocking. Poor sewage system, hygiene, lack of facilities and housing are some of the problems.

The case has been adjourned till August 8 after notices were issued by the Supreme Court to CDA, IMC and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration.
