KARACHI: In a first, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has sought the services of financial institutions’ employees for performing election duties in the country as there is a “shortage of staff”, reported a local media outlet.

At the ECP’s request, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has notified the private banking sectors to volunteer their employees, according to an official.

He said, “It is the first time in the electoral history of Pakistan that bankers are asked to volunteer their services for polling day.”

“The provincial election commissions (PECs) have been asked to coordinate with the SBP to get the services of required bankers associated with all scheduled banks to meet the shortage of election staff,” he also said.

“More than 20 scheduled — both government and private — banks are operating in Pakistan,” the official added.
