Senators question ‘larger role given to Army’ in upcoming polls

ISLAMABAD: A substantial number of senators, while speaking on “matters of public importance” questioned the “larger role” given to the Army pertaining to the upcoming polls and urged Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani to summon the ECP secretary and the chief election commissioner (CEC) to seek an explanation regarding the matter.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lashed out in the Senate at the caretaker government and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and blamed them for allegedly failing to provide a level playing field to political parties.

Earlier, the PML-N had raised the issue in the upper house but days after PPP Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur were summoned by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) the PPP also joined ranks regarding the issue.

Moreover, PPP senators said in the house that Caretaker Interior Minister Muhammad Azam Khan had said on the floor of the Senate that the names of Zardari and his sister had been placed on the Exit Control List (ECL) on the directions of the Supreme Court (SC) but the top court had denied giving such orders.

The senators further decried that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had become a tool “in the hands of the establishment”.
