Second monsoon spell to remain active, alert issued: NDMA

ISLAMABAD: The second monsoon spell is likely to remain active while low to medium flooding is expected in Chenab along with associated nullahs of rivers Ravi and Chenab during the week.

According to daily monsoon situation report issued by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) scattered wind thunderstorm and rain with isolated heavy falls is expected over the Upper Catchments of all the major rivers along with Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore divisions and Kashmir. All the major rivers and dams were flowing below low flood level, the report said.

However, significant rainfall was reported during last 24 hours with maximum precipitation in Garhidupatta 63 mm, Tandali 61 mm, Sialkot 61 mm, Zafarwal 59 mm, Murree 57 mm, Hattian Bala 53 mm, Domel 47 mm and Palandri 40 mm.

The weather remained very hot and humid in most parts of the country.

However, rain-thundershower with gusty winds occurred at isolated places in Malakand, Hazara, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore Divisions and Kashmir.

NDMA has advised the concerned stakeholders to remain on alert and ensure timely clearance of sewerage and drainage system in all major cities including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan and Peshawar.

It also recommended issuing alert to people residing in and close to river plains or watercourses.

The relevant departments should create awareness in public with regards to vacating dangerous buildings, remaining away from electric wires and avoid swimming during rain, especially in underpasses.

The vulnerable population was advised not to venture into nullahs and flash flooding routes.

Meanwhile, National Highways Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and Communication and Works Department (C&W) of respective Provinces and Regions were directed to remain vigilant in restoring road linkages.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Network (NHEPRN) were advised to ensure all provincial Health departments about pre-placement of necessary staff and medicines where required.
