ISLAMABAD: Mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen, vice-chairmen and chiefs of cantonment boards of all local government bodies in the country were suspended by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday.
According to the ECP, the measure has been taken to ensure that the upcoming general elections are free and fair.
General elections are scheduled to be held on July 25.
Previously, civil servants in the country were also transferred by the ECP to prevent bureaucrats from interfering in the polling process.
Earlier on Tuesday, ISPR (Inter Services Public Relations) Director General Major General Asif Ghafoor while talking to media said the army will provide security assistance to the ECP for the conduction of polls, with 370,000 army personnel, including retired reservists, given responsibility for the duty.
The ECP also issued a notification which stated that army officials have deployed for polling duty would have powers of a first-class magistrate.
