ISLAMABAD: Delay in the inauguration of the federal government secretariat is causing an annual loss of Rs1 billion to the national exchequer with funds being used for rented space, a local media outlet reported on Sunday.
Work on the federal government secretariat project started in 2008 but construction has not yet been completed with over 13 government ministries and associated organisations currently working in rental buildings.
Construction was scheduled to cost Rs4.8 billion and take 36 months to complete. 95 per cent of work in completed but the inauguration is expected to occur in June, 2019 to avoid anger from standing committee parliamentarians.
Objections were raised over the contract awards in the auditor general of Pakistan’s report for 2016-17 but were not paid much attention to by officials.
Over 13 ministries, divisions and other relevant departments are currently using rented space, occupying 24,859 square metres of rented space in Islamabad.
