LAHORE: Licensed hunters are hunting birds beyond permitted numbers in Rahim Yar Khan as seasonal migration reaches its peak, a local media outlet reported on Sunday.
The hunters have taken advantage of lenient laws to excessively hunt birds like green parrots and Lali, say locals, with traps being sprung in open fields. Lali’s meat has a strong demand in the restaurant industry. Such hunting practices are leading to degradation of the ecosystem endangering the species themselves.
The green parrot is also widely targeted so it can be captured and sold off in the Gulf countries and Europe. According to wildlife experts, such practices threatens the species in the country.
