LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League (PML) President and former prime minister (PM) Chaudhry Shujat Hussain on Sunday said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) should explain why Bhasha Dam was blocked for 10 years before including it in its manifesto since water has become an issue of Pakistan’s security and existence.

Chaudhry Shujat further said that Bhasha Dam was inaugurated by General Pervez Musharraf and Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in 2006.

He said that the chief justice’s order for the immediate construction of Bhasha Dam is of historical importance and hopefully, whichever new government will come would implement this order of the Supreme Court (SC)  in accordance with its spirit.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Shujat said that Bhasha Dam’s construction began in 2006 during his government and recent SC proceedings had proved that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the N-League government kept work on it ceased.

He thanked Almighty Allah for chief justice’s order of its immediate construction.

Shujat said that politicians keep singing the song of democracy but it is a matter of great regret that the work which was to be done by such politicians has to be carried out by the judiciary.

“Politicians say that the chief justice’s interference is not correct, but who had kept these politicians from the construction of Bhasha Dam in the first place then? Why did they not do it themselves?” concluded the former premier.
